Celebrities Supporting Medical Causes
When you’re a celebrity, it’s good press to have a cause. But, that shouldn’t necessarily make us wary of celebrities who are involved in helping to raise funding for particular medical conditions or illnesses. After all, celebrities are people, too, and many of them have very personal reasons for choosing their causes. Check out some of these celebrities and their causes.
1. Michael J. Fox – Parkinson’s Disease- Of course, by now, most of us know that Michael J. Fox was diagnosed several years ago with Parkinson’s Disease. Since his diagnosis, he has raised awareness of Parkinson’s more than any other person. He started the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which has funded more than $154M in research for treatments and cure for Parkinson’s.
2. Jenny McCarthy – Autism –McCarthy has an autistic son. She has worked tirelessly to get the word out that preservatives in vaccines can be toxic and can cause autism in our children.
3. Jonas Brothers – American Diabetes Foundation – Nick Jonas, of the famous teenybopper band, announced last year that he suffered from Type I Diabetes. The band has been big supporters of the American Diabetes Foundation.
4. Ashton Kutcher – Nothin but nets – Kutcher traveled to Africa where he witnessed the number of children dying from malaria, carried through mosquito bites. He went on to buy 10,000 mosquito bed nets as part of a challenge with CNN.
5. Courtney Cox – Ovarian Cancer Research – Among other causes, Cox has raised money and donated to charities supporting Ovarian Cancer research. In her own life, Cox has watched several friends and family members battle cancer.
6. Sheryl Crow – Breast Cancer – Crow is a breast cancer survivor and has told her story as a way to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research. Christina Applegate and Melissa Etheridge, also breast cancer survivors are also supporters for breast cancer research.
7. Brook Shields – Postpartum Depression –Shields was a Postpartum Depression sufferer after the birth of her first child. She went on to write a book about her trials and has donated time and money to raise awareness about this illness.
8. Jennifer Garner – Influenza – Garner is the national spokesperson for the American Lung Association’s Faces of Influenza campaign, which encourages Americans to get flu vaccines. Garner became concerned about ensuring that those who needed the flu vaccine receive it after becoming a mom.
9. Montel Williams – MS –After being diagnosed with the disease in 1999, he founded the Montel Williams Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. He has also personally raised more than $1M to fight the disease.
10. Lance Armstrong – Cancer – After suffering from testicular cancer himself, Armstrong founded the Lance Armstrong foundation, which coined the LiveStrong phrase and bracelet of the same name.
11. Katie Couric – Colon Cancer – Couric’s husband, Jay Monahan died of colon cancer in 1998. Since then, Couric has been active in promoting colon screenings. She also co-founded the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance.
Celebrities have the power to gain powerful influence and attention to causes they support. And, just like you and me, they often have personal reasons for choosing their causes, based on their own life events or those of their families.
